From Hikoi to Marae: Walking Through Pōkeno’s History with Matthew Dean

Matthew Dean, 7th generation descendant of early settlers, shares his historical knowledge of our ancestors hikoi (travels) for shellfish from Pokeno to Kaiaua, some 8 hours walk in one direction. He also shares his knowledge of a Maaori village at the Avon Reserve, the site we are pursuing from Waikato District Council to build a Marae. A Trustee to the Queens Redoubt Trust, Matthew tells us about the Queens Redoubt, about another important Maaori village Te Paina, and a Flaxmill business. Whanau also share more stories about the waterfall, the tennis court, picking watercress, a community plum tree, and flooding.
