Lifelines & Friendly Faces: Memories of Early Pōkeno Life

Mr Calder, the Green Grocer in Mercer served our community well. Having no waka (car), we would phone Mr Calder every Friday with our shopping list and he would deliver it to our whare (homes) that evening on his way home. A train service linking Pokeno to Pukekohe was well used, and Mrs Goodall was a Justice of the Peace and the local taxi driver. She knew everyone in Pokeno. Mr Johnny MacIntosh the petrol station man, was a lovely man, my mum thought so too because he was the only man to cash my mother’s cheques.
