Te Hītori o Te Haukainga me ngā Mana Whenua o Pokeno Roopu Manaaki

The History of Te Haukainga me ngā Mana Whenua o Pokeno Charitable Trust
For many generations, and many more to come, a diverse community of people have lived and are living in Pokeno. The voice of Maori in this very unique village has been somewhat limited. Development in Pokeno has been ongoing for at least 20 years. In the last 10 years’ development has increased tenfold. The Pokeno Community have had a huge voice in planning all the development thus far, however, the Maori voice has been absent. In February 2018 Mr Haupai Montgomery, and a collective of generational whanau who have lived in Pokeno for decades, began the journey of becoming the Maori voice of Pokeno. In June 2020, a committee was formed to complete an application to obtain a Charitable Trust status. In August 2020, Charitable Trust status was granted. Haupai Montgomery, Louis Whiunui, John Ngatai, Te Puawaitanga Matene, Cecilia Heta and Karen Heta were the initial group that began this journey of the Maori Voice of Pokeno. These six people shall be affectionately referred to as ‘Te Korokoro Maori o Pōkeno’, it is this roopu of whanau that planted the seed that grew the fruit for the Tui (the Maori Community) enabling the Tui to sing. “Me he korokoro tui” (“As sweet-throated as the tui bird”.)
